2021 Monte Rosso Zinfandel

  • Notes

    NOTES FROM CORAL, 11/01/25:

    Eye
    Deep plum core, scarlet rim.

    Nose
English roses, potpourri, and winter spice, with secondary notes of fresh eucalyptus, clove, and cardamom.

    Palate
Sumptuous and layered, this wine slowly reveals a dense, velvety richness. Nuances of Italian leather and graphite lend an earthy elegance beneath the spice and dark fruit. The finish is long, textural, and resonant, carrying floral and mineral impressions far beyond the final sip.

    Cellar life
    Drink now through 2035+.

  • Background

In the tumultuous year that was 2020, following a harrowing fire season in our neck of the woods, we took delivery of our first grapes from the storied Monte Rosso vineyard in Sonoma, then being managed by viticulturist Brenae Royal. David and Brenae had struck up a friendship, kindred spirits of sorts, farming in Napa and Sonoma respectively — he as proprietor with his sisters of Napa’s only Black-owned estate winery and she in charge of what arguably was Gallo's most high-profile piece of vineyard real estate. Their years-long convo about farming in these rarefied realms led to David’s first production of Sonoma sourced Zinfandel, our 2020 Monte Rosso, a.k.a. Wakanda Forever Zin. In the shadow of that blockbuster release came this second vintage, blended from two of the three vineyard blocks that comprised the 2020 and featuring numerous characteristics that recall our estate Zinfandels. For that reason, we are particularly fond of this bottling, which with age has only become more elegant and luscious.
